Only about 1 out of 10 should even bare the name "dog food". The majority are filled with grain filler and by-products. This is why most dog waste looks like an elephant passed by. When the crap coming out of your dog weighs as much as the food that went in, there's a problem! We have spent years trying different commercial foods. All of them were touted as the "highest quality" and all were very expensive. Few lived up to the claims. About 5 years ago, one food in particular impressed us. It used to be called "Eagle Pack Holistic Select". It is now called just "Holistic Select" as the line was recently bought by Wellness. We like foods that use only human grade proteins and ingredients. If the ingredients contain words that you can't even pronounce let alone know what they are, stay clear! Read the first few ingredients on a food label. This is most of what your dog is eating. Avoid food with dyes, artificial ingredients, by-products, high percentages of grains and high salt. We also find that our bulldogs do better on a single source protein like Lamb or Chicken as opposed to Lamb and Chicken.
For the past year or so, I have started my dogs on a homemade diet consisting of whole prey meals. This is something that needs to be well planned out in advance and has to be balanced properly. No matter how good your dog food is, it's not enough. Even a nutrient rich dog food has a good portion of it's nutrients cooked out during processing.
